Anime studio
How an anime studio could look like.

The anime industry is often an extremely hostile environment where most studios barely survive operating mostly at a loss. But there are some who have just struck gold. The well known animation studio OLM which operates under the umbrella of the giant IMAGICA GROUP has just published its financial report for the financial year ending in March 2026. The figures are absolutely staggering. The company reported a net profit of 521 million yen which translates to a staggering 37.2% increase compared to the 379 million yen they managed to gain during the previous period.

The main culprit behind this windfall?

Maomao
Kusuriya no Hitorigoto with Maomao as the stoic protagonist to the rescue.

The overwhelming success of the animated adaptation of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (薬屋のひとりごと). It's no secret that the intricate adventures of the stoic Maomao (Written with two 猫 which means cat and is pronounced māo in chinese) quickly became one of the most coveted and profitable gems of recent seasons. Although this studio has spent decades consolidating its position in the market, the media impact achieved by this particular title helped catapult its profile to the very top of global recognition.

What where they also known for?

OLM
Oriental Light and Magic, Inc.

The studio OLM, formerly known as Oriental Light and Magic is a Japanese animation and film studio founded in June 1994 by former Studio Pastel producers Toshiaki Okuno and Shuukichi Kanda. In 2016, Imagica Group acquired a majority stake in the studio making them a wholly-owned subsidiary. They are well known for prductions like Wedding Peach, Pocket Monsters and Utawarerumono. But today of course, the production committee didn't just raise an all-in with one single production. Throughout this prosperous financial year the studio also kept its machinery running at full capacity with a varied catalogue spanning multiple demographics with projects such as Himitsu no Aipri, Nyaight of the Living Cat and Tsuihousha Shokudo e Youkoso!. With this demonstrating that they do not rely on a single hit to stay afloat financially.

Interesting characters can make for an entertaining story.

Seeing such a massive leap in profit margins is an event that is rarely celebrated so publicly in Japan, especially when so many production companies are forced to close their doors every year due to bankruptcy or poor planning. This impeccable financial year-end demonstrates that investing in top-quality animation and maintaining a steady stream of well diversified productions can be the key to ensuring the financial health of any company within the oversaturated Asian entertainment market where almost every story was already told.
